I am seriously considering just getting a 454 instead of building my little 350 for project Fixxxer.
I know a man who own a junkyard that is really fair with his prices and has a lot of junkyard jewels laying around. Last time I visited him, he had a 383 with Dart heads, a couple of 400 small blocks, and a 10:1 compression 454. It may be possible for me to get my hands on a destroked 400 too.
I also have a buddy at work that thinks his grandpa will sell me just a 454 block to rebuild. Sounds like a good project for this coming winter! ;D
I just think It would be cool to have the big block and I have plenty of room under the hood for one too. The only drawback I have heard about the big blocks is they like to break stuff and are not recommended to be reved to very high RPMs.
So I have plenty of options ranging from running through my own 350, picking up a 383 or 400, or even a 454. Please elaborate on your choices.

i wouldnt really think about the destroked 400 they arent bad but it isnt really a budget motor and there is just other engines that are better. now the 400 is good and cheap if you do it right. but the 454 is still my choice for the truck.

I think the 400sb would be a nice choice. Still a small block, but you could put a low end cam in there that could pull a few stumps plus you'll still be able to use SB parts/accessories that are usually a few bucks cheaper than BB stuff.

I voted 400 just cause inches are inches... And I dont like big heavy big blocks... You can get more inches out of them, but the weight sucks. Oh yeah, with the right stroke you can build that 400 block to some big inches, and its still lighter than a big block.

Thanks for the replies. I can stroke the 454 out if push comes to shove, that should offset the weight issues. I seen several rotating parts for the BBC cheap and can withstand lots of abuse. I am still leaning with most of you toward the BBC.

Hey Tommy, which truck will this motor be going in? The S-10? The engine will be going in the C10. Now that I think of it, If I do get a BBC for the C10, that will leave me with the 350 on the side. Maybe a future S10 project.

Okay, I know, I still need therapy.....but the Doctor says I'm getting better.

Believe me, no fear if I get the 454. What about high RPMs with the big block? I have heard you can't rev them as high as a small block.

If it is just a "toy" meaning not your daily driver & have access to a BB, then thats what I would go with. I would go with a 4" stroke crank making it 496ci. Then add whatever you want. Blower etc. A good 406 or larger sb would be ok but there is nothing like having a rat motor between your fenders.
