Well I read a mag of something tuner and it claimed royal purple to be the best oil. this is because they have been in the game forever, and they concentrate on oil and not other things they need to sell as well. Plus i can get it at the store and its cheaper!

what do you think is the difference in the RP street oil ($5/quart) and RP race oil ($10/quart)?
ill give you a hint, in the RP race oil its the same thing that redline gives you in both their street and race oils for $8/quart. im not oil expert, but being that i crew on a local nascar craftsman truck team i have access to some of the best brains in the world when it comes to this stuff. a $5/qt 'synthetic' is a mineral base stock. i havent seen one yet thats not. the only mass marketed full synthetics i know of are RP race oil (which you dont want to use in a street car), RL race oil (which you also dont want to use in a street car), RL street oil, and amsoil. someone correct me if im wrong.
but ive been told its a waste of money to run these mineral base stock 'synthetics' by someone who makes the stuff.

im not saying m1 is a bad oil. they work, for what you are doing its fine. but i can tell you from the $10K 600cc race engines that ive built to run 15K rpm, and what the oil engineers have told me. the gtx is good stuff and IMO the 'intermediate' oils are a waste of money.

I'll have to agree that Castrol GTX is most likely the best conventional oil.
A few years back I worked in a local refinery as an outside contractor with the railroad. We spotted RR tank cars inside the refinery every day.
I'm sure many of you know that many different brands of oil can come from the same refinery. Even though the refinery I worked at was a Sun refinery, they packaged motor oil for many different brands. Without naming all the brands I'll just say they packaged oil for most of the major brands. The base stock was all the same and the difference in brands was the additive package they paid the refinery to add to their oil (gasoline is pretty much the same deal).
One day I was in the lunch room at the "lube oil blender" section of the refinery and the lube blenders were eating lunch at the time. I used this opportunity quiz them on who really has the best oil. Without going into detail about the different brands (no need to knock them, but we talked about them all), they told me that Castrol used the best additive package and they didn't cut any corners on it. They said Castrol was the only oil they blended that went well above the standard in every category with their additive package.
You can take this for what it's worth, but that's what they told me. When I use a conventional oil now I always use Castrol.
