Well I called White County Building Department to come out and do my final inspection on my new garage. I did not pass. There were five things that they sited that were not up to code they they had PASSED on the last inspection. At the bottom Barney Friggin Fife writes THIS IS A 2 CAR GARAGE NOT A STORAGE/UTILITY BUILDING. No $hit Sherlock. I stated that to begin with when I got the building permit in 2004. Well I left 2 angry messages on the answering machine demanding that I get some answers to this crap. Man, I am so pissed. If they won't budge on it, screw em! I am not changing a thing about the building. I spent alot of time and money building it right. If they don't like it tough

Any paperwork on the last inspection that you could show them as proof of passing the last time?

Any paperwork on the last inspection that you could show them as proof of passing the last time? This is what the idiot failed that really ticks me off. - Need dripedge on exposed facia on the roof. HELLO its there
- Overspanned rafters. 2x6 boards cannot span more than 16 ft. I talked to them about this during the framing inspection and the inspector said he would pass it if I did not hang any sheetrock in the building which I did not
These guys are total inbred morons. On the first inspection, they left a note saying WHERE IS THE SEPTIC TANK? BUILDING CANNOT STAND ABOVE SEPTIC TANK. Folks, I live on the side of a hill and this garage is at the TOP of it ABOVE the house (Docspeed can vouch for that). Let me ask yall this SINCE WHEN DOES $HIT FLOW UP HILL

I've spent some time in the construction industry(in the past). In my experience, pissing off the inspector is BAD. That man can make or break you. At this point he has all the power on whether or not you pass.(I'm assuming they have the same authority as they do in Texas). I think your probably gonna have to conform to what he wants, regardless of what the other inspectors passed. I could be wrong, I'm basing this on my experience with commercial construction.

What happens if I don't call them out again? They never came out on their own to begin with. They can't very well make me tear the thing down. This has cost me alot of money and alot my time time. I was told that the rafters would be ok back in Novemeber by a different inspector. Now I have this kid telling me otherwise. What's the worst they could do? I am not changing anything.

Sorry, spent a little too much time to post. Sounds to me he was an idiot. As long as he doesn't have a legitimate case you don't have anything to worry about

As long as he doesn't have a legitimate case you don't have anything to worry about Let me ask you this Turtle since you have some experience. I know this is not a commercial building so I don't know if you would know or not. What if they say make these changes and we will come out and inspect. I say ok and never call them out again. Purely hypothetical question.

As long as he dosn't have a legitimate b!tch you can probably fight it

Those guys are truly as dumb as a bag of hammers. I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've been having -- I know you've been working on that building for a long time. I don't have any personal experience with stuff like that, so I can't offer advice. What are you supposed to do, if they don't follow their own rules? I'd probably try to get ahold of the first inspector. According to his observations, you DID build it to code. Afterall, you were following his advice.

UPDATE: After a long restless nights sleep, I called the White County Building Department to inquire about the failed inspection. I finally talked to the lady that inspected the garage. Turns out the guy that did the rough inspection no longer works there and she started in May. I debated that the things she was siting had ALREADY passed the rough inspection. After half an hour of this, she says she needs to check what was on the rough inspection. Her biggest concern was that the 2x6 rafters were spanning farther than code allowed. She said if it was a few inches it was ok otherwise it would not pass it. Well, the span was 3 ft longer than code so I am thinking I am screwed After waiting a half an hour I get called by the main building inspector. He said that since the items listed were either passed on the last inspection or cosmetic, he would pass the garage. He told me that I just need to come by and pick up my Certificate of Occupancy.... ;D IT PASSED ;D

Got the CO! Sweet man! No matter what, they couldnt make you tear it apart and redo it, its already done and passed prior inspections... The "main" inspector knew this and probably pounded it into one of those inbreds face for giving you a hard time. If they made you tear it apart, you could have sued the county for misinformation (the original passed inspections) that led to additional costs (labor and materials) and heartache... Glad to hear you passed! and your lucky your not in FL with our codes
