Well, the garage I have been building for the past 1 1/2 years is 99% finished. Now its time to start Project: Metalbeast, my beloved 1997 Camaro Z28
Background: I purchased the Camaro back in February of 2004. Although it needed paint, and some TLC, it ran incredibly strong for a car with 140K on the clock. I bought the car with the sole purpose to make her one of the best performing, best looking street machines in North Georgia.
First order of business was to freshen up the tranny. The synchros when out shortly after I bought the car. I pulled the tranny and sent it to Southern Gear in Smyrna, Georgia for a complete rebuild. They did an outstanding job and the tranny shifts perfectly.
Now that I have space to work on the car, its time to get busy. This will be my second LT1 project. In 2003 I pulled the motor out of my 1992 Corvette, built the bottom end, and installed one of More Performances, over priced H/C packages on the car. I learned alot about the LT1 from that build and hope to apply that knowledge to Metalbeast.
The Plan:
The following mods will be done to the Camaro:
Performance Mods:
Bottom End: 396 Stroker
I have been back and forth with going 383 or 396. It seems that the price difference in stroker kits for good 383s is about the same as that for 396s. The big difference will be the machine work and assembly. I have already talked to my engine builder and the price is not going to be much more to just go 396.
Top End: LE Ported AFR 210s, LT4 Intake & Custom Cam:
I ordered the AFR 210s at the end of July from my friend Drew at Madracing. He told me they would come in in about 2-3 months.
Once I get the heads in and purchase the LT4 intake, I will contact Lloyd Elliot to see where we will go from there
Exhaust: Pacesetter LTs, True Dual Exhaust
Intake: Moroso CAI, BBK 58 MM TB
Fuel: New Fuel Pump, Accel 36 lb/hr injectors
Suspension: Moser 12 bolt, BMR TA, LCAs, Panhard Bar more parts TBD
Cosmetics:
Paint: I will be doing the paint with the help of my best friend Tommy Hicks. His father in law is one of the best P&B men around. Color TBA
Interior: New Carpet from Year One, Reupholstered Seats, New sail panels, Floor mats, etc.
Wheels: Polished Aluminum ZR-1s in Immaculate Condition (17x9.5 Front, 17x11 Rear) purchased from my good buddy Steve (slt200mph on LS1tech).
Thats the jist of it. I plan on taking photos and using this thread as a log of the updates on the progress of the beast.
ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!
Until next time....STAY TUNED!
