This is an old death, but one that really put "there is always faster out there" into perspective. I had just bought my 1990 300ZX TT in January of 1998. I was 22 and my previous rides were an 87 Mustang LX 4 banger and a 1989 300ZX. It was pretty d@mn fast I thought. The only mods I had were HKS Intake, HKS CB, and !Cats.
Well fast forward 6 months, I drive up to my friend Jeremy's house to pick him up so we could go see Docspeed graduate from Banks County High School. He lives in Lula, which is about 10 miles from the high school on a long desolate road in the middle of Banks County, Georgia. We start driving for about 10 minutes and Jeremy is just in awe of my car. I start to approach this long 1/2 mile straight road when I see this POS blue Foxbody Coupe in my rearview mirror. I slow down to about 50 and look over at Jeremy and say "Watch this" thinking I am going to hand this guy a seriousa$$whopping. Well I let the guy start to pass, and I drop it in third and start to take off when he pulls up beside me. He simply looks over, down shifts and starts to pull away pretty fast. 65, 75, 85, the distance gets farther and farther behind him. By 115 he had what looked like a buslength. He sticks his hand out the window, slows down and starts waving me on. Well, I was totally embarrased that I got pounded like I did. Turns out the guy was Will Colefield, a buddy of Tommy and Jeremy's that had built that engine in class. He was headed to the same graduation ceremonies as I was. Humble pie tasted pretty sour that day...pretty sour indeed.
