I have always been kinda thingyy with my 01 trans am, (headers, cam, and a few other toys,,,)
but just got smoked by a 4 cylinder. twice!
at a stoplight an old eagle talon pulls up next to me, i guess it is turbo and AWD, kinda like a WRX or EVO i guess.
surprisingly, not a high schooler driving it, this guy looked like he was quickly approaching his 50s.
so he tosses a few revs my way and i return the noise.
the light turns green and this car is F#*cking GONE!!
I don't think my buddy's nova with 10.5 slicks on the back launches this hard! by the top of third gear, i am still way behind this car.
eventually he slows to legal speeds and I catch up to him,, this time we slow to about 35mph and floor it after three beeps. again this little Talon is gone. I think i was even with him for maybe a half second and then he walks away from me,, maybe more like a quick jog, i have never seen a 4 banger this fast, especially in montana. I got to chat with him at a gas station, he says it had the stock bottom end, a pair of cams ( it actually idles kinda lumpy,, sounded OK) and a huge hair dryer hanging off the front end.... and an intercooler that would be more appropriate on a turbo diesel.
I guess for the first time i have a little,, ( i mean super tiny) respect for these cars....
anybody have this happen to them before?
and by the way smart asses, yes my car was running fine...

hahha. What year talon?? Those 91's can be made into FAST cars VERY cheap. It's sad but when they whoop youra$$you have to show a little respect unfortunatly. But i highly doubt he was running a stock botton. If thats the case he is going to blow it soon. Especially running dual overhead cams with a turbo etc. Well just gives you more reason to mod your car.  |

i talked to this guy again,, got more info, stock bottom end,, (over 172000 miles total and he said about 20,000 on the current combo of mods..) , HKS 272 cams... ( sounded kinda lumpy) home cylinder head port, and the turbo was a hybrid 20G turbo..and a speed density fuel mgmt set up instead of the MAF... the shop he uses, www.buschurracing.com says the turbo can flow enough air to push these cars in the high tens!! ( appearently this guy is a guru in the mitsubishi world) i am impressed! this is kinda funny,, he got a little fustrated when I pt his car in the same league as a honda. i guess just 'cause you run an import doesn't necessarily make you a ricer. his other car is a '65 Buick Gran Sport with a juiced BBC and 2 speed power glide, and mini tubbed in the back I also learned a new acronym for H.O.N.D.A. How Odd, No d@mn Acceleration. I s'pose it doesn't matter what you run as long as it is fast. I think i will find my redemption to these losses in iether a ati procharger or a pair of AFR heads..... |

When my TA was stock, I got worked by an AWD Talon being driven by a gray haired old fart. I never told anyone, I just bought a blower and went looking for him to get my redemption. I never found it with that blower, but it was only a day or two after having my car dyno tuned with the new Procharger when I finally found that guy again. Lets just say this, he still got me off the line, but couldnt keep his lead after 2nd gear! By the top of third I was running by.  |

i have a guy i know here in houston that used to work at HPE actually and has a 10 second talon...sounds about the same as that guys car but it is fully built and i swear that intercooler is made for a semi truck..it goes ALL the way accross his whole bumper to the headlights

those talons and the 3000gt-r twin turbo's are some sneaky little cars,gotta watch out for them and not take them lightly |

yes those little 4 bangers are fast, i happen to have a 99 GS-T with a FEW things done to it. i also have a 95 TA that i dont think i will ever get rid of even when the day comes when it doesnt run anymore, someone will have to pry the keys from my dead lifeless hands and even then it will still be a challenge!!! back to the topic at hand, by old talon i can assume you mean pre 94, they actually have a stronger block (6 bolt) than the second gen (7 bolt), while this guy was far from stock trim if you do happen to find one thats mostly stock the 1st gen's have a bigger turbo than the 2nd gen's so they tend to be a little better on the highway while the 95-99's have a smaller turbo that spools sooo quick if you blink you'll miss the needle on the boost gauge go up. however around 5500 rpm that turbo runs out of breath pretty bad.
note* my eclipse is my daily driver due to high gas prices, i have never and will never race an f-body......mustangs are fair game!!!!!!

yup, i've seen some f-bodys in the area i know i could outrun but i own one and theres just a certain amount of respect you have to have.

i know exactly what you all mean, shoot i drive a 4 cylinder (2003 Cavalier LS) so at least it's a GM product... it'll kill foxbodies and mid 90s Mustang GTs all day long, even the newer V6's itll take, runs a 15.6 stock. not to bad for 140 HP w/ a 5 speed... but i refuse to race any F body or chevy V8, i'm a chevy boy at heart and i can't do anything but smile when i see those cars
