My 1997 Firebird formula has the automatic 4 speed 4L60E transmission. I like it. I upgraded it for performance with a 2800 stall torque convertor and a shift kit. I am running 3.73 rear end gears.
I think manual transmissions are fun, but I chose an Auto beacause I have to drive my car daily in stop and go traffic. A manual trans would get old going back and forth from first to second. Plus my wife can't drive a manual if her life depended on it! ;D

I own a auto ride but I perfer a manual transmission anyday. I enjoy changing gears, autos just get boring after a while.

lets see i will go threw the list my first car i owned '98 Z28 M6 '01 Z28 M6 '90 tercel M4 '79 Z28 M4 '95 caprice A4 converted to M6 cars that my parents gave me '91 T-bird A4 '82 F100 A3 '84 E150 A4 '85 F150 A4 my parents and there silly fords with there silly automatics my '79 isnt that bad in daily driving, my tercel needed work so out cam the '79 and i have an aftermarket clutch that is a little stiff. but the tercel, and all 3 M6s are easy driving. except the caprice needs 4.10 gears to get outta the hole better, but that makes it easier because less shifting in stop and go.

I used to have an '80, owned it for 11yrs. I miss it, I'll get another one later, my '02 is great for now. BTW in two weeks I'm swaping the 4L60e for a T5, then its track time.
saw your pics of the '79, cool ride, I used to have those same wheels on mine.

why did you decide on a T5 instead of a T56?

for one, I have the T5 and the donor car already, its cheaper this way. and two, got plenty of feedback from the gear wizards telling me that a stock 3.8 would not have enough torque to move the 6th gear. I see plenty of ads on TV of new V6 ricers that come with 6spd but they are pushing close to 300HP my 3.8 stock is 200HP, don't know what its doing now with the mods but in a few months I'm taking it to the dyno for a tune and friday is track time for benchmark.
I also found out that I'm running 3.42 gears, it was an option added to the car, there is an RPO code GU6 and Y87 and a whole bunch of other ones. I know Y87 is a performance package but don't know what it includes. anyone know??

dont know what a Y87 is i only have RPOs from '95. and i didnt see that you had a 3800. oh and as to if it will pull. you can make it pull. my caprice now has a t56 and a 3.23 gear and a tall tire and really wont pull, but if i change to a 4.10 it should pull nicely. then you would get out of the whole real quick

what about highway driving and top speed with a T56 and 4.10 gears? depends on your tire size, but in my case i would have no problem, you shouldnt have too much of a problem 2000 rpm would be 75-76 mph, this is on a 235 55 r16. it isnt gonna be happy going up a hill. but it wouldnt be too bad

Got a T56 in the Camaro and a 4L60E in the Truck with an LT1. Gotta give it to the T56. Six-speed with 4.10s is soooo much fun to drive and it gets pretty good gas mileage too.

I'll eventually get an LS1/T56 in my car, I don't think L36/T5 will keep me happy for too long, its pretty d*mn good on gas and it's got plenty of get-go power. Maybe by this time next year, I'll be asking LS1/T56 tech help questions, for now L36/T5 will do, it fits my wallet nicely.

I swapped my 4L60E out for a t56 shortly after burning up my 4th auto trans... Autos are nice for a braket race car (think th350,th400), but if you drive hard on the street at all Im convince that a manual is the only way you'll get the reliability. The 4L60's I was burning up were garaunteed to 600rwhp, I toasted all for putting less than 400 down! After the 4th one they stoped honoring the warranty saying I was abusing the car. IMHO, if your gonna put a "600hp" rating on something, it better hold 400 for a LOOOOONG time. When my mostly stock T56 finally dies, I'll be looking into a pro shifted (clutchless) Liberty or G-force trans.
