I swapped my 4L60E out for a t56 shortly after burning up my 4th auto trans... Autos are nice for a braket race car (think th350,th400), but if you drive hard on the street at all Im convince that a manual is the only way you'll get the reliability. The 4L60's I was burning up were garaunteed to 600rwhp, I toasted all for putting less than 400 down! After the 4th one they stoped honoring the warranty saying I was abusing the car. IMHO, if your gonna put a "600hp" rating on something, it better hold 400 for a LOOOOONG time. When my mostly stock T56 finally dies, I'll be looking into a pro shifted (clutchless) Liberty or G-force trans. If you are planning on driving it on the street, you do not want a pro-shifted tranny. They won't downshift without grinding all the time. Upshifts are great, that is what they are for, straight line racing only.
