basically because it is a smaller rear end it dosent have the material to take the shock of hard launches and distrbute it. so the ring gear or pinion pop.
it has a 7.5 or 7.6 inch ring gear, i always get them confused, and that is small. the ten bolt in my caprice and '79 camaro have 8.5" ring gears, and that also means that they have bigger cases and can hold more load. the 12 bolt is a 8.8" ring gear and it can hold more. but if you want the bigger, consiquently stronger, you either have to go with a ford 9" or something like a Dana 60.

At what horsepower/ tire combination do you need to worry about the rear? 500? 600? 700?

Thanks, Dave All it takes is sticky tires and a few hard clutch dumps to grenade the stock rearends, usually the ring and pinion are what let go, Aaron stated before. Some live longer than others. If you have an automatic, it will live longer, but if you are planning on 500+ rwhp, start saving for a 12 bolt or 9".

i would actually on a manual look at replacing or strengthing the stock one at 350 RWHP. i replaced mine at 370 RWHP
