My 96 was originally an automatic car, and since the M6 swap we've had occasional tuning troubles with getting the car to idle correctly... When slowing for a light and coasting or even sitting still, the rpms are slow to fall and sometimes hang at 2000rpm and 1500rpm. It will also be idling fine one moment then suddenly stumble and try to stall. PCMforless fixed it the first time, then I broke the powerdyne and bought the procharger. The idle problem came back on the first startup with the new blower installed. I went and had it dyno tuned and then we did some driveability tuning to try and fix the idle. It took several tries and it is 90% better now... Both tuners that worked on the car recommended swaping to a PCM with base programming for a factory 6spd car(6sp VIN #). I've always heard that the 95 OBD 1 pcm was better suited for aftermarket mods than the 96-97 pcms.
My questions: Is it worth it to swap to a 95 PCM instead of swapin to another 96pcm with a M6 vin number? If its really that much better, can I keep my TCS/ASR system? Do I need to swap wiring harnesses also? I already modded my stock '96 A4 harness to work with the M6.

from what i have read, and seen it is a good swap. i got a car with OBD1 and have done a A4 to M6 swap and never had any problems other than getting the program installed, Win XP dosent work. and now that i got the program it is happy.

Win XP doesnt work with LT1 edit? So thats 1 for the swap and 0 against it... Now I just gotta find out some more small details and it'll be time to start gathering parts. I just need to know if the TCS will work, and if I'll need to swap the wiring harness.

<Update> I just talked to the guy who's been doing my tuning about the OBD1 vs OBD2... He said that the difference between the two PCM's from a tuning standpoint is the trouble codes. He said that OBD1 only has like 78(??) possible trouble codes to keep happy, where the OBD2 has something like 1600 possible codes. He does the most of his tuning on OBD2 LS1 cars, so he of course doesnt have any problem with tuning an OBD2 car. I'm gonna stick with my OBD2, just cause he's confident that we'll have the problems solved soon.
