I can get a 6AL for $230+ (tax included) and I was wondering is this thing worth the money? I know on older vehicles these MSD boxes can make a difference but how about on a 1995 Z28?
Thanks

This depends on your mods. If your motor is pretty much stock, than an MSD setup isn't much of an advantage. Now if your running nitrous or a blower, this stuff is a must.
What have you done to your motor so far?

Right now I'm looking to get the car repainted so right now I have a few bolts ons on the car. Things like CAI, catback exhaust and headers are on the way. Basically I work at an autoparts store and I found this while digging out one of the cages so I was almost the victim of an impulse purchase lol. Long term goal is that I do plan on running nitrous after I finish my bolt ons so that is why I was thinking of about getting it now.

It's a good idea if your going to run nitrous. Not only for the power benefit, but a misfire with nitrous can blow exhaust components off your car. Not to cool.

I was looking around and I can see that MSD makes several of these little boxes for a V8. I was wondering what is the 6AL, kind of like a mid grade unit? I only plan on buying one of these so if it would be worth it to spend the extra money for the upper line unit I would have no problem doing that.

I agree with Raymond.
As far as the Mallory, the only experience I have is a friend has one and it burned up in less than 3 months but he's not the sharpest tool in the shed so maybe he had something miswired. I've never heard anything bad about them.

If you're wanting to go a little better get the Digital 6. It's a lot better deal than the 6AL for not too much more bucks. IMHO unless you're running nitrous or boost the opti is hot enough. If you are running nitrous then what you really need is a window switch for the N2O system and not just a top end rev limit in addition to a hotter spark.

I've never liked MSD, and that includes their ignition boxes. They rarely make any extra power over stock, although occasionally I will see some low speed driveability and mileage improvements. Most people don't realize that the 6-series boxes don't really do anything over 3500 RPM. They fire multiple times before 3500 (and some debate the benefits of even that), but after that it becomes a single spark again.
Their coils are terrible, too. They all fail within the first couple of years. Their components are really bad build quality, too.
That being said, I have a 6A on my car, but only because I bought it for $40. Otherwise I wouldn't have it.
If you want a good ignition go with Crane. I've seen the internals of everything out there, and Crane has the best build quality of all of them. Failures of any component are exceptionally rare, and they have a bolt-on kit for the LT1. I've run a Crane coil on my car now for about 6 years.
