I decided last weekend to start my spring time project. Decided to give the bird a fresh paint job. We are going to replace the pass 1/4 panel (Has alot of filler from an accident along time ago). I guess I will see if I still have the skills that I used to. About 10yrs ago I used to work in the body shop business. Worked for a Caddilac, BMW, & Mercedes dealership paint shop. But I havent painted in about 6years, so kind of out of practice. So if it turns out good then everyone will see pics.

Hopefully I'll have it finished this week. It's been alot of work. The flash of the camera makes it look orange. It is still it's original patriot red. We did add a dash of red pearl to the first coat of clear. Here's one of it outside the day after it was shot.

Those pics look great Scooter. I'm gonna be doing a little painting on my Bird pretty soon to. Just the bumpers, there in desperate need of it. I've never painted a car before so I think I'll just start small. Any pointers you could give would be a big help. Thanks.

We were having massive problems because it was really too hot to paint. So my friend that has been painting 20+ years helped me with the actual shooting of the car. It ended up being shot at midnight with temps still at 90degrees outside. Got a few goof ups that I have to go back & fix but nothing major.
What color is your car? One thing is you may need to take your car or a part of it ( gas door etc.) down to the local automotive paint supplier to have them match the paint. I think that they have some hi-tech scanners now that can give a near exact match. For some reason plastic bumpers are hard to get to match the rest of the car. Biggest advise is to take your time & if you have never painted before, to read up on the procedures, I'm sure that your local book store will have some books on the subject. I am by far not a professsional painter, I'd consider myself as an experienced amature. But in your case starting small is the way you learn. After you do some small stuff then you will be comfortable & confident to tackle larger projects. Be prepaired for "sticker shock" on paint prices. My base color "patriot red" is $400 a gallon. I bout fell over. Thats just for the paint itself. Then you have all your activators, clear & reducers. Fortunantly for your bumpers you will need only a quart. I did my whole car with 1/2 gallon of base color. It does however have a whole gallon of clear on it. I wanted pleanty of room for color sanding. When you get ready do yours, I'll be around if you have questions, I'll help where ever I can. Have a good one.

My car is silver. I was hoping to be able to just pull the numbers for the stock paint, but I just found out that the previouse owner had the car repainted whith a different shade of silver. So yeah I guess I will have to get it color matched. If i have any questions I'll definatley be sure to post them. Thanks, and again your car looks great Scooter.

Well here it is all done. Overall it turned out good, a few boo-boos here & there. Still want to do some more color sanding & buffing here in a couple of months when the weather cools off.
